Arctic Defender and Goldman Prize winner Norma Kassi with her son Yudii in Old Crow
We once found it difficult to ask people to help. But then we traveled with Gwich’in speakers to places like Newark, Phoenix, Los Angeles . . . and Washington, DC. These people come from tiny, remote villages and some had never been to a big city. They are used to straight talk and listening to their elders. They are not used to eating bad restaurant food, sleeping in Motel 8s and speaking in front of crowds. The longer they were away, the more they missed their homes – and their caribou meat.
We’re no longer embarrassed to ask for help. The stakes are high for all of us as we try to protect the refuge, but the consequences of losing are unthinkable for the Gwich’in.
Here are some ways you can help:
- Contact your politicians and ask them to permanently protect the Arctic Refuge.
- In Canada, contact the Prime Minister and Minister of the Environment.
- In the US, contact your Senators and Representative – for more information go to the Alaska Wilderness League's website: http://www.alaskawild.org/takeaction.html
- Support conservation groups who are working to protect the Arctic Refuge. Two worthwhile groups other than the Alaska Wilderness League are: The Sierra Club: http://www.sierraclub.com/arctic/ and the National Audubon Society: http://www.protectthearctic.com/
- Limit your use of fossil-fuels.
